DO These Things
Water first-year plantings only. Established natives handle August on their own, but anything planted in the last year is still building the deep roots that earn that independence. One deep soak a week during dry stretches is plenty.
Walk your garden with a notebook. Where are the bloom gaps? What's thriving? August is audit season, and your notes become your fall seed order.
Keep an eye out for monarch caterpillars. Egg-laying is in full swing on milkweed. If you find chewed leaves and striped caterpillars, you're doing it right. Resist any urge to "treat" the damage.
