Here's the full journey of a Seed In The Ground donation, from the moment you give to the moment native habitat goes into real soil, and how it powers the grants opening September
Nonprofits ask for donations constantly. Far fewer show you what happens after you click "give." So today, as July closes, we're opening the books on our Seed In The Ground program and answering the question every donor deserves to have answered: where does the money actually go?
The Short Answer
Your donation puts native seed into real soil and funds the grants that help communities do the same. That's the whole model. Here's the long version.
Step 1: You Give
Every Seed In The Ground contribution, whether it's a few dollars added at checkout or a standalone gift, goes toward one mission: getting native habitat established where it will do lasting good. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, your donation is tax-deductible.
Step 2: Seeds Go Into the Ground
Donations directly support native seed and planting resources for habitat projects. Not marketing mailers, not overhead-heavy campaigns. Seed, soil contact, and the support needed to make plantings succeed. It's in the name for a reason.
Step 3: Donations Feed the Grants Program
Here's the part we're most excited about. Your giving builds the fund behind the NFS Grants Program, opening September , which awards native planting grants to schools, parks, community gardens, and local organizations nationwide. When a third-grade class plants a pollinator garden next spring, or a neighborhood group converts a vacant lot into habitat, donations like yours are what wrote that check.
Donate in July, and by fall your gift is reviewing applications. By spring, it's blooming somewhere you've never been. That's the loop.
Step 4: You See the Results
Starting this fall, grant recipients and their projects will be featured across our blog and social channels, so you can watch your collective impact take root, literally. Our October update will introduce the first round of applicants.
Three Ways to Be Part of It

- Spread the word. If your local school or community group could use a native planting grant, tell them September 1 is the date. Our Community Advocates are already doing exactly this.
Why It Matters Now
Every seed bundle sold plants one garden. Every donation plants gardens we'll never see, in communities we may never visit, tended by people who just needed a little help getting started. That's how a movement outgrows its founders.
