Description
Amorpha nana, commonly known as dwarf false indigo or fragrant false indigo, is a small, deciduous shrub native to the central United States. Typically growing only 1 to 3 feet tall, it thrives in dry prairies, open woodlands, and rocky slopes, where it helps stabilize soil and enrich it with nitrogen through its root nodules. This hardy shrub features delicate, pinnately compound leaves and produces clusters of showy, purple to violet flowers with bright yellow stamens in late spring to early summer, attracting a wide range of pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Its compact size, drought tolerance, and ecological value make it an excellent choice for native plant gardens, prairie restorations, and wildlife habitats.
