Native Plants by State: The Complete Guide to What Grows Where You Live
Native" is not one answer. It is fifty. Here is the guide to what actually belongs where you live, and when to get it in the ground.
There is a question we get more than any other, and it always arrives in some version of the same six words.
What should I plant where I live?
It sounds like it should have a simple answer. It does not, and the reason why is the most important thing you will learn about native plants.
"Native" is not one answer. It is fifty.
Walk into most garden centers and you will find a rack labeled "native wildflower mix." Turn the packet over. Nine times out of ten, the fine print says something like *native to North America.*
North America is 9.5 million square miles. It contains Arctic tundra, Sonoran desert, Appalachian cove forest, tallgrass prairie, cypress swamp, and coastal chaparral. A plant native to one of those places can be a genuine problem in another. A seed that is perfectly at home in Tucson can rot in a Vermont spring. A prairie species built for Kansas can behave like a bully in a Georgia woodland.
So when a label says "native to North America," it is technically accurate and practically useless. It is the botanical equivalent of a restaurant saying its food is "from Earth."
The question worth asking is narrower. Not is this plant native, but is this plant native here, in this soil, on this rainfall, at this latitude, and does it have a relationship with the insects that already live in my yard?
That last part is the whole game.
Why local origin matters more than most people are told
Most people come to native plants through pollinators. They read that monarchs need milkweed, or that native bees are declining, and they want to help. That instinct is right, and it is also incomplete.
The reason native plants matter is not that they are prettier or lower maintenance, though they often are both. It is that the insects in your area have spent thousands of years co-evolving with specific plants. Many of them cannot simply switch. A specialist bee that only collects pollen from one plant genus does not adapt when you plant something else. It just leaves, or it does not reproduce.
Roughly 90 percent of plant-eating insects can only eat plants they share an evolutionary history with. Those insects are the base of the food web. They are what baby birds eat. A yard full of plants from other continents can look green and lush and still function, ecologically, like a parking lot.
This is the idea behind the Homegrown National Park movement, and it is why we connect our customers' gardens to that map. Your yard alone is small. Your yard plus your neighbor's plus the strip by the school plus the corner of the church lot is a corridor. Corridors are how species move, and movement is how they survive a changing climate.
That is also why we care so much about which state you are in. We are not trying to sell you a wildflower mix. We are trying to help you rebuild a specific piece of a specific ecosystem.
How to figure out what is native to your state
Before you buy anything from anyone, including us, here is the free research path. It takes about fifteen minutes and it will make you a much harder person to sell junk to.
Step one: find your ecoregion, not just your state.
State lines are political. Plants do not read them. Texas alone contains at least ten distinct ecoregions, from the Piney Woods to the Chihuahuan Desert. The EPA publishes an ecoregion map that will tell you which one you are standing in. Start there.
Step two: check the range map for any species you are considering.
The USDA PLANTS Database and BONAP (the Biota of North America Program) both publish county-level distribution maps. If you look up a species and your county is not shaded, that plant does not naturally occur where you live. That does not automatically make it a bad choice, but it does mean the seller should be telling you that upfront.
Step three: call your state extension office.
Every state has a land-grant university with a Cooperative Extension service, and every one of them publishes free, regionally specific native plant guidance. This is the single most underused resource in American gardening. Search for your state's name plus "extension native plants." Their advice is unbiased because they are not selling you anything.
Step four: confirm your USDA hardiness zone, and then remember that it is only half the answer.
Zone tells you how cold your winter gets. It tells you nothing about rainfall, humidity, soil, or summer heat. Plenty of plants are hardy in your zone and still miserable in your yard. We wrote a whole piece on reading zone maps properly, and it goes live at the end of this month.
Find your state
Below is every state, grouped into the regions that actually share growing conditions. Each regional guide covers frost timing, sowing windows, soil realities, and the specific species we carry that belong there. They publish through the fall, and this page updates as each one goes live.
Northeast
Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania
Short season, cold winters, reliable snow cover in the north. This is the easiest region in the country for fall sowing, because winter does the stratification work for you at no cost.
Mid-Atlantic
Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington DC
A transition zone where northern and southern species overlap, which gives you an unusually wide palette. Heavy clay soil is the recurring challenge, and there are natives that specifically love it.
Southeast
North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama
Long growing season, humid summers, and a real question about whether "winter" is cold enough to stratify seed. In much of Florida, it is not, and that changes the whole approach.
Gulf South
Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee
Heat, humidity, and rainfall that arrives all at once. Wetland and bottomland natives shine here and are badly underplanted.
Midwest and Great Lakes
Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin
The old tallgrass prairie and oak savanna country. Some of the richest native flora in North America, most of it converted to corn and lawn. Restoration here has outsized impact.
Upper Midwest and Plains
Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas
Brutal winters, hot dry summers, deep soil, and prairie species with roots that go down fifteen feet. If you want plants that survive drought without irrigation, this is their homeland.
South-Central
Texas, Oklahoma, Kentucky
Wildly variable. Texas alone spans desert to swamp. Fall sowing is close to mandatory here, because spring heat arrives before spring-sown seedlings can establish.
Mountain West
Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho
High elevation, thin dry air, intense sun, short seasons, and unpredictable late frost. Fewer species, but the ones that belong here are extraordinarily tough.
Southwest
Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada
Two rainy seasons in much of the region, and timing your sowing to the monsoon matters more than any calendar date. Desert natives are not just drought tolerant, they are drought dependent.
Pacific Northwest
Washington, Oregon
Wet winters, dry summers, mild everything. The Mediterranean-style climate here means the native growth cycle runs on a different schedule than most of the country.
California
California
Its own region, because it has to be. More native plant species than any other state, an enormous number found nowhere else on Earth, and a fall-and-winter growing season that reverses everything gardeners elsewhere are taught.
Alaska and Hawaii
Alaska, Hawaii
The two states where "native plant gardening" means something genuinely different, and where the honest answer for both is that most mainland seed catalogs, including ours, cannot serve you well. We wrote that one anyway, because you deserve a real answer rather than silence.
The fall window is open right now
If you are reading this in September, you are in the best planting window of the year for most of the country, and almost nobody knows it.
Native perennial seeds are not like vegetable seeds. Most of them carry a dormancy mechanism that keeps them from sprouting at the wrong time. The most common one is cold moist stratification: the seed will not germinate until it has spent a sustained stretch cold and damp, the way it would if it had fallen from the parent plant in autumn and sat under snow.
You can replicate that in your refrigerator. Or you can sow now, let winter do it for free, and get spring germination on nature's own schedule.
Fall sowing is easier, cheaper, and closer to what the plant expects. It is also why our restock timing runs the way it does. We are not trying to move product in September, we are trying to get seed into the ground during the weeks when it works best.
